Microbial oxidation of benzene and singlet oxygen reaction of the resulting cis-cyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol have been used in the synthesis of four inositols (the muco, allo, epi and (±)-chiro isomers) and of the 2-O-methyl-chiro-inositol, (±)-quebrachitol.
